Kondaji Farzand was one of strongest and courageous warrior of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. It is said that Kondaji Farzand was 6.5 feet tall. But according to historical documents very less information is available about this unsung warrior. Kondaji Farzand was mentored under the great Subedar Tanaji Malusare.

As per records he had made his body as hard like a stone and was very strong. The most famous battle he fought was the battle of Panhala Fort. He won the fort taking just 60 soldiers with him defeating an army of nearly 2500 soldiers. The battle of Panhala Fort is elaborated below.

  • The battle of Panhala Fort :
Early in the year 1673 Panhala fort was captured by the Mughal and Bijapuri combined forces. Panhala Fort was one of the important fort in the deccan region. Having control over the Panhala was like having control over the western deccan. Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was very upset for not having a fort like Panhala in the Swarajya. To have control over Adilshahi Panhala Fort was very important and to safeguard the routes of Konkan.

Back in the year 1666 Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj attacked Panhala Fort with an army of 2000 soldiers. But he had to retreat. After in the year 1673 Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj addressed Kondaji Farzand to take over Panhala fort. Kondaji agreed happily. Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj asked how many soldiers ypu need for this campaign '3000' , '5000' or '10000'. Kondaji shook his head in the negative.

Kondaji Farzand replied demanding very less soldiers like 50-60. Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was shocked after hearing this. At the time of campaign Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj stopped Kondaji and handed a gold Bracelet over to his hand. There were many kings who gifted their soldiers after winning the campaigns but there was only one king who used to gift before wining any campaign having trust yes my soldiers will definitely win the battle.

At that time the commander on Panhala Fort was Adilshaha's Beshak Khan. Kondaji took his army of 60 soldiers during night. All the 60 Soldiers were split all over the fort. Some soldiers shouted हुजूर मराठे, हुजूर मराठे. The Maratha soldiers attacked the enemy soldiers with great force. Commander Beshak Khan woked up with a jolt. After comming down he saw the brave Maratha soldiers fighting.

He saw one Great warrior with big body structure Kondaji Farzand. He attacked Kondaji from back with a sword. But kondaji didn't waved and looked back quickly. Kondaji seperated his head from his body swinging his sword like a lighting stroke.

Seeing their commander dead he Adilshahi soldiers began to run for their lives. Kondaji and the 60 soldiers won the Panhala Fort.

After the death of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Kondaji Farand served Chatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj but unfortunately he was killed by the Siddhi of Adilshahi while capturing the Janjira Fort.

Will make a detailed post regarding the Janjira battle.
